After a 16 hours long bus ride I was finally in Mendoza. Mendoza is famous all over the world for it's wine...maybe Malbec specifically. And this off course, attracts a lot of people. At the time I was there, around the 10th - 14th of February (and off course on the 12th, my birthday!)it was some holidaystuff/carnevalstuff going on in Argentina, at everything was fully booked. A lot of people on holiday from other parts in Argentina.
I was looking forward to, or dreamt about lazy days, with loads of trips in green surroundings by bike...from one vineyard to another, and just trying out different kinds of vine the whole day. I did vine tours off course. I just thought it would be more countryside. Mendoza (the district), is desert, but they have a good system for watering parks and so on. So to be a desert, it's really green, hehe.
It was a much bigger city than I thought. But then it was this "holidaything" or summer vacation, high season - which off course made everything more expensive, fully booked and closed down.
Well...anyway, I stayed at this hostel the empredado, which was really nice, and also had the best included breakfast I've had this far (as always a lot of sweet stuff but different), a big kitchen, common areas, hammocks and a small small pool.
Chilltime.... |
Every day it was some kind of activity in the hostel: vine-tasting, bbq-night, cooking class for empinadas:) I love empinadas! Always fun when it's a bit of activities in the hostel.
The bus on the vin-yard tour was full of Spanish speaking people, but then I found the ONE person who spoke English. At every stop the 2 of us got our own English speaking guide. It was like a private guided tour. The others where maybe 40? We got to see so much more...tested more vine, and also got to try some older/better vine. In my head a vine tour would make me tipsy... I was wrong. But we learned a lot about the production of vine, why the color is like that, what that means ans so on. There and then it felt like I knew some stuff about vine, proud! The new knowledge vanished very soon.

God vin:)
Anyway...the first day, I went on a organized tour to 3 vineyards and a fabric making olive oil. Very important: Extra virgin oil. But no season for olives...no production to watch...but tasting paste and stuff is also good.
A couple of days later I went on a organized bicycle- tour. I took some hours, and we went to 3 different places as well. It costed a bit more, but soo worth it. Inclusive fancy lunch and a bit more vine. Bicycling was so chill and nice. We went to a guy called Caramel Pati (his vine on the pic above), a nice olderly man with a good sense of humor. He doesn't to the production of vine, but stores vine in bottles over time...and export. Good vine, and he's obviously very famous.
I would recommend Mikes bicycletours. Funny fact: Mike, and his business partner, have been several times in Norway, during season for rafting. Both of them have travelled a lot, also in Kristiansund (my small hometown), they have eaten Bacalao (fishdish, very good and famous) at Sjøstjerna in Kristiansund...and they drove the beautiful Atlantic Road. Small world kind of.
Hmmm...hva mer enn vin i Mendoza.
hmm...Mendoza. Well, I celebrated my birthday there. A very lazy day:) First birthday in years where I'm not working, and nobody cares....It was about 35 degrees, to hot to do anything anyway, so I stayed mostly at the hostel, in a hammock, close to the small pool with a cold beer. A very nice and chill birthday I would say.
Later in the evening it was a free vine-tasting at the hostel...after that, more vine. I got a birthdaysong....The only gift I got this year is a bottle of vine from the hostel. I didn't expect that, and was so happy :)
